1960 356B Super 90 Roadster
Undercarriage 100% Restored
The topside restoration of 88205 was completed three years ago and it has been driven extensively since. But the undercarriage was in mostly original condition and was long overdue for refurbishing. It turned into a two month project with the majority of the work being done by the talented Thomas Robertson of Audette Garage. We're posting a list here of the work done to help others who are comptemplating a similar project.
Undercarriage Scraped & Cleaned
- Seam Sealer Applied
- Undercoating Applied
Powder Coated the Following:
- sway bar & mounts
- camber compensator
- spring plates & spring plate covers
- tie rods
- backing plates
- rear axle oil seal covers
- bump stop mounts
- hand brake mechanicals
Brake System Rebuilt
- master cylinder rebuilt
- wheel cylinders rebuilt
- drums turned
- new brake shoes installed
- stainless steel brake hoses installed
Suspension Rebuilt
- new link pins installed
- new king pins installed
- all rubber bushings replaced
- camber compensator asembly rebuilt
- new Koni's installed
- T6 trailing arm covers & bushings installed
- alignment done
Transmission Rebuilt
- rebuilt by German Transaxle in Bend, Oregon:
- replaced cracked differential housing
- replaced worn ring & pinion gears (with gears purchased from the auction at Harry Pellow's old shop)
- replaced seals
- refinished case
- new transmission mounts installed
- new starter bushing installed
Steering Rebuilt
- steering box cleaned, new seals installed
- new coupler installed
- rebuilt original tie rods with fittings
- new bushings installed
- new shaft bearings installed
- new steering damper installed
Shift Linkage Rebuilt
- bushings in shift housing replaced
- shift arm bushing replaced
- installed new inner & outer boots
Heating System Rebuilt
- NOS J tubes & flapper boxes installed
- heating rods & cables hooked up
- "straws", grommets and booties replaced
- new heater hoses with correct clamps installed
Miscellaneous
- horns rebuilt & refinished
- parking lights grounded
- electrical connections cleaned and correct color wiring installed
- billet sump plate from Maine Custom by Design installed
- new tach cable installed
- new cable hangers installed
- muffler painted with VHT paint
- new throttle linkage bellcrank on transmission installed
- new motor mounts installed
- correct & original fasteners used everywhere (for example: 8mm/14mm ATF used for bumpers)
- Redline 90wt. in transmission
- Castrol GTX 20-50 in engine
Now that the project is complete the Mouse is nearing a concours level. But it will continue to be driven frequently, as was intended. Just too much fun to leave in the garage.
